December 1981 with my brother and sister and our homemade Christmas tree.
We traveled out of state to visit my grandparents for Christmas that year, so my parents decided it didn’t make economical sense to buy a Christmas tree. (To this day, my parents don’t care for artificial Christmas trees.) As a miserly adult, I now appreciate their decision. However, at the time I was adamant that we SHOULD have a tree. So I gathered pieces of notebook paper, taped them together, and cut out a tree shape. After coloring it green and adding ornaments, I taped it and lights to our window.
